RELEASE EDINBURGH FESTIVAL FRINGE
June 2004 World
Domination through Karaoke Great tunes, dad-dancing, gruesome beheadings and regicide the real shock and awe welcome to the UBU DISCO! In Philip Graham's irreverent adaptation, Alfred Jarry's bonkers litany of battles, torture and political chicanery presents 'King' Ubu as a fantasist DJ behind the decks at the wedding from hell. Ma Ubu is doing the catering, so heaven help the guests, as Pa Ubu's disco greats trigger off lurid and increasingly suspect memories of his glory days as King of Poland - 'I will survive' indeed. Using kitchen utensils, the gift of song and whatever they can find behind the bar (including the guests), this gruesome pair re-enact their history. Who needs the juggernaut of war when things can be settled through the wheels of steel? Brute Farce's distinctive approach blends strong ensemble playing with visual flair and stylistic invention as a versatile cast of 5 act out a hilarious story of bloodshed, violence and romance to the beat of the disco greats. UBU DISCO is produced jointly by Edinburgh veterans Skullduggery Theatre Company and renowned touring company Brute Farce. Skullduggery's previous Edinburgh productions, which include the cult hit 'I am Star Trek', have transferred to the Hackney Empire, the Shaw Theatre, and the New York Fringe as well as scooping a nomination for the Stage Best Actress Award. Brute Farce, a mutant cross between Brecht and Ray Cooney, raised by wolves on a diet of the Marx brothers and Chaplin, have produced a mixture of the classics and new writing - all in their own inimitable style.
