King Ubu
"Caricatures are luridly well observed ... Fast-paced and boisterously silly, this show defies expectations and never lapses into a dull moment"

King Ubu (in association with Mainbrace Theatre) by Alfred Jarry, trans & directed by Phil Graham, designed by Lalitha Mackenzie. Brockley Jack Theatre, Brockley, Feb 1997.

Mainbrace Theatre were company in residence at the Brockley Jack Theatre in south east London and offered Brute Farce the opportunity to work at this exciting and flourishing fringe venue.

As with Escurial, Philip Graham provided a new translation from the French, and a brand new version of Jarry's lewd, absurdist farce about political and military ambition was launched.

The play follows the fortunes of Pa Ubu, an officer in the Polish army who sets his sights on the throne and leads a bloody revolution. The results are crude, ridiculous and constantly hilarious.

In Brute Farce's production, the almost limitless cast was honed to five. Rob Crouch as Pa Ubu, Charity Trimm as his wife, Ma Ubu, Chris Roach and Val Zydb as the King and Queen and Neil Edmond in the double role of Captain McFetid and Buggerov.

King Ubu ran from 28 Jan to 16 Feb at the Brockley Jack Theatre.
