Dr Faustus
"This production is fantastically inventive, curiously feminist, never bordering on the self indulgent and refreshingly modern"

Dr Faustus by Christopher Marlowe, in a new version devised by Brute Farce, directed by Philip Graham & Rob Crouch. North Pole Theatre, Greenwich, June 1997 and Etcetera Theatre Club, Camden, Aug 1997.

Brute Farce returned to the North Pole Theatre for their third production with a show that was largely conceived with that particular space in mind.

Their Dr Faustus was a stripped down, experimental version of Marlowe's classic tale of aspiration, greed and satanic dealings. The play was performed by four actors with Ella Harris, Rachel French and Sarah Goddard between them playing a tortured Mephistopheles and tormenting George Symes' hapless Faustus.

Between them, and aided by video, stick puppets and a DJ mixed soundtrack, the three actors transport Faustus, through a condensed selection of the play's original scenes, to his ultimate demise without ever leaving his lonely study.

The show was then transferred to the Etcetera theatre club for a short run later that summer.
